While I was researching reference material for a painting to illustrate John Gierach’s closing column in Fly Rod & Reel, I came across a collection of photographs from Dillon Wallace and Leonidas Hubbard’s ill-fated expedition in Labrador. The basis for the classic, “Lure of the Labrador Wild”.

John and Robin Reeve had floated the same river as Hubbard and Wallace, a river few men have ever seen. In homage to the expedition, and to Hubbard who lost his life, I decided to use one of the expedition’s photographs as the basis for the Illustration.

This painting was created to illustrate John Gierach’s Sporting Life column in the Winter 2014 issue of Fly Rod & Reel magazine. The oil on stretched canvas measures 24 x 20.
