The seasons happen quickly in Alaska, with spring, summer, and fall compressed into just four short months. There was evidence of the winter past – ice on the upper lakes – when we arrived in late May. When we left at the end of September, the harbingers of winter – fresh snow in the mountains and frozen wading boots on the cabin porch – had arrived. Of all the seasons I’ve experienced in Alaska, fall was always my favorite. I’ll never forget my autumns in the Tikchiks; the mornings cool, and the skies clear and high. The tundra’s riot of colors, and the golden birch and cottonwood leaves dancing in the breeze.
