Details
I believe that art should evoke a sense of time and place, and that a successful painting elicits sensory responses beyond the visual. I judge a painting to be good when I hear the wind in the grass or feel the warmth of a low sun on my face and a cool tidal breeze on my back.
A good painting lets me taste the wind, feel the perfect weight of a good fish in my hands, or listen to a pair of ravens calling as they paddle across the dawn sky.
The coast of the Bering Sea, in Southwest Alaska, opens onto a horizon with no end. Watching the golden light of dawn burst over the distant mountains and race across the landscape is something I’ve never gotten used to – and will always strive to render.
