For the past decade, Don Thomas’ “Closing Time” columns in Ducks Unlimited magazine have received wide critical praise. Divided into five sections – Waterfowl, In the Field: Ducks, In the Field: Geese, Retrievers and The Waterfowling Culture – this collection of those columns also includes nine chapters and five introductory essays that have not been published previously as well as photography by the author and his wife, Lori.

From the foreword by Matt Young, editor of Ducks Unlimited:
Like other great writers, the author is a born storyteller, and he lives a life that provides plenty of interesting material to write about. How many outdoor writers have taken big game on five continents with a longbow, piloted a bush plane to a duck shack on Cook Inlet tide flats, guided brown bear hunters on the Alaskan Peninsula, and made seviche for friends from a redfish caught in the Gulf of Mexico? All of this and much more appear to come naturally to him, just like his ability to describe his outdoor adventures in lyrical prose. But I believe the author is at his best when he writes about the common experiences shared by waterfowlers everywhere; the cherished company of family and friends, the sights and sounds of a duck marsh at dawn, the joys of hunting with a faithful retriever, the satisfaction of making a good, clean shot, and the endless mysteries of waterfowl and the natural world.
