Metamorphosis was created to illustrate “Painting for John” in the December 2025 issue of TROUT magazine. The column is a look back at my 40-year partnership with John Gierach, including some of my favorite paintings of him, with anecdotes about those images.
This painting will introduce the column, and was particularly challenging in many aspects. While I’ve painted John countless times, it’s always been at ground level, as if we were sharing time on the water with him. This painting is from a very different and elevated perspective.
The reason for this different point of view is that I’m not rendering a painting of John… I’m imagining John’s perspective, having left his earthly bonds to hover above and watch my progress down the river.
The sun is low and the shadows are long. There are many miles before my float is finished, and the front of my boat is empty.
