The collection of images included in this book represents some of my best work over the past four decades. The selection includes 246 images rendered in oil, watercolor, pencil and ink. The subject matter includes a wide array of sporting images; fresh and saltwater fly fishing, upland and waterfowl hunting, game fish, game birds and sporting dogs, both in the field and in portrait. The compilation also includes traditional sporting still life paintings and renderings of the sporting environ; landscapes from Alaska to Patagonia and points between.
All of the images in the book are annotated with descriptions explaining the story behind the work; the inspiration, history, and location. Scattered throughout the volume, like shaded benches in a sculpture garden, are numerous sidebars which explain and describe the painting process.
In addition to the artwork and instructional sidebars, there are ten of my favorite illustrated essays, most of which have been published in various sporting journals and outdoor publications.
Introductions by John Gierach and Don Thomas lead into fishing and wingshooting sections, respectively. The foreword is written by Tom Rosenbauer.
“Few artists capture the sporting life with the bold bright strokes, the flair, and the accuracy Bob White brings to his paintings. From the richness and fleeting pleasures of days afield and astream, he freezes for us many memorable moments.” ~ Nick Lyons
“Mark Twain said, “Write what you know.” Bob White has taken that advice and applied it to the canvas. Fortunately for us, Bob knows wilderness—the rivers, landscapes, wildlife, and the light that falls across it—and the hunters and anglers who find inspiration in it. Each rendering is an honest and artistic take on the places sportsmen most want to be.” ~ Russ Lumpkin, Editor, Gray’s Sporting Journal
“It’s rare that a skilled artist is also an accomplished writer. Yet Bob is one of those rare individuals who’s been blessed with both talents, and few have been able to balance and blend them together as successfully as Bob. From bird hunting to bass fishing, Alaska salmon to Minnesota muskie, Bob Whites words and artwork accomplish that highest of achievements; making us feel as though we are there with him, in the woods or on the water, sharing the experience.” ~ Tom Bie, Editor, Drake magazine
