I’m putting the finishing touches on this painting today. This illustration for E. Donnall Thomas Jr.’s next column in Ducks Unlimited is due. Today.
I started illustrating Don’s column in 2007. I created “The Start of It All” for one of those first columns, a story in which Don describes his first duck hunt and being carried out to the blind by his father. Even though I’ve painted an earlier version, the powerful image of a son on his father’s shoulders seemed the right way to illustrate Don’s column in the next issue of Ducks Unlimited magazine.
