These signed and numbered limited edition fine art reproductions are printed on 100% cotton Moab Entrada cold press fine art paper or on archival 19 mil Lyve stretched canvas.

Paper Print — Artwork printed on paper. Because it’s flat, it needs to be framed with a mat and glass before it can be displayed.

Stretched Canvas Print — Artwork printed on canvas fabric, then stretched tightly around a wooden frame. This gives it a three-dimensional look, with the image wrapping around the edges. It’s ready to hang as-is, with no framing required.

Cost Difference — Paper prints have a lower upfront cost, but framing adds expense since you need a mat and glass. Canvas prints cost more initially due to the materials and labor involved in stretching them. That said, if you do decide to frame a canvas print, it ends up cheaper than framing a paper print, since canvas doesn’t need a mat or glass for protection.

Neither option is inherently “better” — the right choice depends on your décor style, budget, and how you want the piece to feel in the space.

For an additional charge, Bob will add an original pencil drawing of a fly pattern or gamebird feather to the bottom of your paper print. Describe the fly pattern or gamebird feather that you would like Bob to draw.

Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Fine Art Print

Metamorphosis was created to illustrate “Painting for John” in the December 2025 issue of TROUT magazine. The column is a look back at my 40-year partnership with John Gierach, including some of my favorite paintings of him, with anecdotes about those images.

This painting will introduce the column, and was particularly challenging in many aspects. While I’ve painted John countless times, it’s always been at ground level, as if we were sharing time on the water with him. This painting is from a very different and elevated perspective.

The reason for this different point of view is that I’m not rendering a painting of John… I’m imagining John’s perspective, having left his earthly bonds to hover above and watch my progress down the river.

The sun is low and the shadows are long. There are many miles before my float is finished, and the front of my boat is empty.
